Cullen – Crannoch Circular Path

The route provides a variety of views and habitats. Travelling clockwise, the first section east of Cullen provides open views over agricultural land and the coast. The woodland loop provides access to conifer/mixed woodland and freshwater habitats.

    A mixture of pavements, quiet country roads, and farm tracks, with aggregate and earth paths through the woodland section. These woodland and farm tracks can be muddy in wet weather, and watch out for tree roots within Crannoch Wood. There is a short steep slope at the eastern entrance to the Crannoch Wood circular path, which can be slippy.

    Undulating route with long steady inclines/ declines. One steep section present at the eastern entrance to the Crannoch Wood circular path.

  • Barriers: Some barriers

    Care to be taken when crossing the A98 - this is a very fast and busy road. Several gates leading along the farm track from Cullen to Crannoch Wood.

This path is part of a network of promoted paths, which start and finish at Cullen Square where there is a map board, parking, toilets and shops. The routes are centred around the pretty fishing village of Cullen, and its surrounding countryside. The rugged skerries, cliffs and coves of the Moray Firth provide a dramatic setting for this historic town, making Cullen not only an attraction for visitors, but also a haven for many species of marine wildlife and seabirds.

Starting at Cullen Square take the path up the hill and turn right along Reidhaven Street. At Seafield Place turn left towards the playing field.

Following the timber finger post, take the gravel track along the edge of the playing field and continue right up the hill. At the gate turn left and follow the green waymarkers along the farm track for about a mile. Enjoy the magnificent coastal views as the path gradually rises up towards Crannoch Hill Wood.

If you wish, take the woodland loop up past the tranquil Crannoch Hill Loch, otherwise continue along the edge of the wood. Pass over the old Railway bridge and turn left along the tarmac track towards the old quarry, following the waymarkers.

Take great care crossing the busy A98 road, then follow the timber waymarkers along the minor country roads to Lintmill. From here follow the cycle path back towards Cullen. Follow the signs past the cemetery and along Findlater Drive, Cathay Terrace, South Deskford Street, and then turn right back to the Square.

The route can be walked in either direction, or can be shortened slightly to avoid Lintmill and the A98 road crossing.

Shortened Route

Distance 5.5km (3.5 miles), approx 1hr 30 min.

Follow the easterly approach to Crannoch Wood from Cullen Square, and follow the Crannoch Wood circular path via the loch. Return to Cullen along the same route.
